Planning a cozy evening!

Hello everybody who loves Mystery Science Theatre 3000!
I have been trying to get my girlfriend to watch the series with me and after a lot of, and a lot, and a lot of asking she said that she is willing to give it a try. You can only guess who is the happiest man alive. I have been waiting for so long to get the chance to show this amazing series for a girlfriend. Of course i have waited for a while also, just because it is a quite special kind of show and i did not really wanna show it to her on the first date or so haha! That could have been awkward. But now that we are a couple for real she knows that i like the show, she have never seen an episode so does not know what it is about. It is quite exciting for me to see her reaction. I really hope that she will enjoy the show, but it is ok if she doesn’t. The fact that she wants to give it a try is all i want and that makes me happy. The only thing that she has demanded from me is to prepare a cozy evening?
Do you guys have any tip on what you can do to make it more cozy when watching moves/series?
I have searched a little bit online and found a couple of thing that you can do but most of them seems more appropriate if you don’t want to watch a movie if you know what i mean. Well what i found was:

Candles. “put out the lights and light up some candles to make it extra cozy”. Hm, i don’t know what i feel about this. Candles could be quite disturbing also if they reflect badly on the screen. And they want them to have some sort of smell? Like what?
Rose Petals. Where do people even get these ideas? Throw some rose petals on the bed? I think not. Where do you even buy rose petals? Stupid thing.
Take a bath. And this is where i stopped reading. I don’t know what kind of tips this was, but i didn’t like it.

I thought i would do more things connected to the movie night. I think more like, having some chips and coke. Dimming the lights and maybe having a blanket in the sofa. I think that would be quite nice, but what do you think? Is she going to want more? It’s so hard do know sometimes.. but more focus on us and not on some rose petals and shitty candles. Or maybe i should have some candles lit when she comes over and then we would blow them out once we start watching the show? I don’t know at all. So all of you out there, please help!!! I am really bad at this and don’t want to ruin the night for her. Maybe i should have everything ready on the table when she comes over also so we can start watching immediately. And maybe have some scented candles in the bedroom to light up after! Yes we will have to about that haha! Please send some tips and i will tell you all about how it went! When i was searching around for some cozy evening tips someone also linked this website about online casinos. But i don’t really think that is something for this date! Haha! There are certainly things for everybody out there. Until next time!

cozy candles for our evening

Which are the actors that was a part of the original cast?

Since they are going to start shooting a whole new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 with fourteen new episodes i must tell you about the original cast since most of them has declined to be a part of the new season unfortunately. Since a dedicated an entire post here about Joel Hodgson i will not write about him in this post even though he is one of the creators. So i am going to tell you about the actors and creators behind MST3K, Michael J Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Frank Conniff, Bill Corbett, Mary Jo Pehl and J Elvis Weinstein in this order also, so lets start with Michael!

Michael J Nelson
An american comedian and he is most known for writing the series. He was the head writer of the show and was also a part in it. He played the on-air host with his name, Mike Nelson. Fun facts about Michael is that he worked as a waiter and was doing a little bit of stand up when he was offered a part on the show. How life can works sometimes! It’s crazy.

Trace Beaulieu
Trace is both a writer and an actor. He is also a puppeteer and in the show he operated and did the voice for Crow T. Robot! He wrote fore the 8 first seasons on the show. He also had a role as a crazy scientist, Dr. Clayton Forrester. In season 7 some thing happened between the actors on the show and Beaulieu chose to leave the show completely.

Kevin Murphy
Kevin Murphy was the voice and puppeteer for the character Tom Servo on the show. Except for that he spent eleven years as a writer on the show. He replaced J. Elvis Weinstein who had operated Tom Servo from the beginning. In the last three seasons Murphy got an additional role as Professor Bobo, a gorilla how happened to speak English. Yeah, you already know how crazy this show is!

Frank Conniff
Frank Conniff is like all the men above a writer and actor. In the show he played Frank, also one of the mad scientists. Conniff was a part of the show from the second to the sixth season. He wrote some parts to, but his main role was the one as Frank.

Bill Corbitt
Bill who’s real name is William, no surprise, is an american actor and writer. He also did the voice for Crow T. Robot but only for the last season. That was the only part he played in the series, but he is as important like the rest of the gang.

Mary Jo Pehl
Mary Jo also did some of the writings to the MST3K series. She is also an actor and had several parts on the show. She was the voice in the beginning of the show that presented upcoming commercials. The role was called “magic voice” since nobody knew who it was at first. When Beaulieu had left the show Pehl also got to be one of the mad scientists.

J. Elvis Weinstein
Josh is most famous for his role as Dr. Laurence Erhardt and as the original voice for Tom Servo and Gypsy in the show. He was one of the founders/creators of the show when he was only seventeen. He left the show since the age gap between him and the other cast was so big and he did not feel good about that. A little sad since he was one the head writers.

Well now you know a little bit more about everyone on the show! We will have to wait and see if some of them shows up in the new season or if the cast is completely new!

Wouldn’t it be cool to turn MST3K to a game?

South Park slotSometimes I gamble. Yes, I’m not proud of it, but sometimes I do. Usually I play slots and have recently noticed how many slots that has been inspired by movies. I think more and more has been developed, after game developers have started to cooperate with film studios like Universal Studios. For example the slots Frankenstein, Grease, The Hangover, Lord of the Rings, The Dark Night, Spider-Man, Star Trek and Marvel-slots. Some of them has a progressive jackpot as well. And I have seen that’s there aren’t only movie themed slots in the business, but also slots based on tv-series. See for example the slot South Park that is inspired by the cult series. I played it and it was quite fun. I read about this slot, and  also the South Park Reel Chaos slot, at Casinocenter which is a site that has listed a lot of slots. And then I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to turn MST3K to a game? I honestly thought about it briefly before, when I wrote my previous post about popcorn and found the popcorn slot.

So how would the game look like? In my fantasy I would make Tom Servo and Gypsy to bonus symbols and have three bonus games, just like in South Park. I would turn Joel into a scatter symbol and Mike Nelson into a wild symbol. I think the avalanche feature in Gonzo’s Quest is pretty cool, so maybe I would use this in the MST3K slot. But what shall I do with the B-movies, the theatre and the popcorn? Perhaps the bonus round can be opened with old fashioned curtains? The background can be black and white and Joel can comment on the winnings together with his robots. The intro can be a short introduction to when Joel is trapped on the Satellite of Love and is forced to watch the movies.

Wouldn’t that be a great slot? I’m pretty sure it would! Perhaps I shall send my idea to NetEnt or Microgaming 😉 But on the other hand, perhaps Joel Hodgson himself won’t like the show to be turned into a game, so it might be a bad idea….

By the way, I have ordered the complete series now…. It will be so fun to watch! I am really looking forward to it! I think I will start at the beginning and watch the episodes in the right order, although I have my favorites. My girlfriend won’t be too happy though, I’ll guess, since it’s around 10 years of episodes to watch. But she’ll have to put up with it, because I want to watch everything before the new episodes will be launched.

Crow T. Robot

CrowTRobotOf course I have to say some things about the robots starring in MST3K, starting with Crow T. Robot. As you know, it’s a robot that Joel built, who together with Joel, Tom Servo, Gypsy and Cambot comments on B-movies. Joel created his robots so they could help him not to get mad watching the B-movies that scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester forced him to watch.

The T. in Crows name stands for “The” and in one episode Joel said that Crow stood for Cybernetic Remotely Operated women”. Crow got really upset and had an identity crisis until Joel revealed that he had built Crow to play tis joke on him.

Joel sometimes calls Crow for Art, which comes from an episode in which The Honeymooners where showed. Joel played a joke on Crow referring to co-star Art Carney. After a drawing sent in from a child who didn’t get the Art Crow-joke and labeled the drawing as Art, the joke became recurring in the series.

The voice actor was from the beginning Trace Beallieu, but from the eight season Crow was voiced by Bill Corbett. In the revival Crow will be voiced by Hampton Yunt. Do you remember him announcing“Ladies and Gentlemen, Topo Gigio” in the earlier season? Well, that was the voice if Ed Sullivan.

Crow was the only one of the robots that visited Deep 13, where the scientist worked and later lived. In the final episode Dr.Forrester shut down Deep 13. That was after his fundings was cut and then he moved back in with his mother. It will be interesting to see the return in the revival.

Crow often take the appearance of the characters in the movie as part of the jokes.

Perhaps you didn’t know that the original Crow actually was built by Joel Hodgson himself in one night, just before filming the pilot episode? The puppet was later redesigned to the present appearance.

Which are the best popcorn to eat while watching MST3K?

In this post I will actually leave MST3K for a while and talk about something else that is important: Popcorn. An important feature for me while I was watching MST3K was what kind of popcorns to use when hearing comments about B-movies.

Regular Popcorn – Always works, but it can be a bit boring. You need plenty of salt and my personal taste is that they should be a little bit crunchy, which means more burned than soft.

Butter Popcorn – My favorite! You can’t have too much butter on popcorn! Well, you might if you do them yourself, since it really stick to your fingers. But when you buy them from a machine , the more yellow the better!!

Cheddar Popcorn – Well, cheddar is lovely, but is it suitable for popcorn? Or should it remain in Cheez Doodles only? I love Cheddar Popcorn, but I can’t eat a too much of it, I’ll get kind of sick at the taste after a while and it taste like socks.

Toffee Popcorn – Sweet popcorn are yummy too. But also, not too many of them… Sweets are better off on candy.

Popcorn with different flavors – I have a popcorn-lover friend that have introduced me to have cinnamon on Popcorns. It works, but it doesn’t beat butter!

Colored popcorn – Colored popcorn with sugar looks better than they taste. But are enjoyable anyway in the company of Joel and the crew!

Cookie popcorn – I read a recipe about mixing popcorn with crushed Oreos and then adding melted chocolate to this. I’ve never tried it, but honestly, can that be good? I’m doubtful.

Apple popcorn – Mix apple crisps with popcorn, melted butter, sugar, salt an syrup and put in the oven for 5 minutes. Taste quite good with the sweetness, salt and sourness mixture.

Parmesan and garlic – I love popcorn, I love parmesan and I love garlic. Add a little bit of melted butter and sprinkle the parmesan and the grinded garlic spice and you’re in heaven! You can add Rosemary if you want.

A warning – I bought a popcorn machine since it was fat free (or I got it from my girlfriend… What does she wan’t too say with that??) Well, anyway, the good thing about it was just to put down the corn and pop it, without using butter or oil. And perhaps they were fat free, but so tasteless! Even the salt didn’t stick! So not even the guys on MST3K can make me laugh when eating these babies….

Conclusion – buttered popcorn are the best! What’s your favorite? You can tell me here. With a bit of imagination you can vary the flavour of popcorn endlessly. Good Luck!

By the way, I saw a clip of a cool popcorn slot machine the other day with a popcorn theme, I think it was a tip from the site casinosnack.com. But the best thing was the voices in the background, almost like MST3K (but worse language, though)…. 😉

Have a look:

The revival

Who would have thought that the show MST3K would have a revival? Well, at least not me!! But I’m very happy that Joel Hodgson decided to bring back the show! He started everything in 2010, but increased the efforts in 2013. He worked closely with the production company Shout! Factory that had published many shows, since Hodgson thought that it was time for a revival. The series still had fans, although it was 25 years ago it was launched. Some shows had got a contribute from it’s fans to start broadcasting again, so Hodgson thought a Kickstarter Campaign would be a good idea. He wanted the fans to say their point of view of what kind of show they wanted, just not the network. He launched a $2 million Kickstarter campaign to produce three new episodes. A goal was $5,5 million, which would allow 12 new episodes. And he actually got $5,764,229 from around 48 000 fans and with a little bit of extra for backer add-ons the money allows 14 brand new episodes to be produced! A first glimpse will hopefully be in 2016 San Diego Comic-Con festival.

Hodgson had already decided that there will be a whole new staff that will write the new shows and it has been selected by Joel Hodgson himself. It will be both cast members and backers from the campaign and also some guest writers. He had opened for some of the exciting staff to be apart of the creative process or make guest appearances, but apparently Nelson, Weinstein, Beaulieu, Pehl, and Corbett have declined for different reasons. Paul Chaplin, one of the original writers will take part, however and also, Charlie Erickson who composed the original theme song will make the music arrangements even for the new episodes. The original costume designer Beez McKeever will do props and costumes even for the new show.

I really hope it will be as good as the last episodes, but I think it will be difficult… I’m afraid I might be disappointed. As I said, some people hope they will be more edgy, but I’m not sure of my opinion on that. But I believe it must have some new features, because if the new cast do exactly the same as the old did 20 years ago I think many fans will loose the feeling they had for the original show. But, I’m not sure…

Joel Hodgson – The creator of MST3K

Joel HodgsonI have to write a little about Joel Hodgson, the creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000, in which he starred as Joel Robinson.

Joel Gordon Hodgson was born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 20th of February 1960. In his early days he performed as a magician, an artform he developed when starting at Bethel University where he studied Theatre and Mass Media. He added comics and music to his performances and actually won prizes before moving to Los Angeles, where he was discovered by Late night with David Letterman producer Berry Sand. He then starred in both Letterman show and Saturday Night Live only at the age of 22. Joel Hodgson also worked in a comedy store and he has produced material for other comedians, including robots. That is also a background to MST3K which Hodgson created in 1988, in which Joel Robinson had built his robot sidekicks.

In the show, one of the robots, Gypsy, thought that the scientists that had captured Joel was planning to kill him, so she helped Joel to escape. And that’s when Joel was replaced by Michael J. Nelson in MST3K.

For Joel Hodgson it was a tragedy to leave the show, but it was to keep the show alive since him and the producer Jim Mallon was fighting for the creative rights of the series. Joel Hodgson made a guest appearance in the final seasons (which aren’t final anymore, since 14 new episodes will be made :) Unfortunately not with Hodgson as the host, even if he has chosen the cast)

After MST3K Joel Hodgson has been working with other comedy projects as well, amongst others as a guest star on Jerry Seinfeld’s web show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and as the voice Mayor Bill Dewey for the show Steven Universe. He also did a tour with the same concept as MST3K which was called Cinematic Titanic and which casted some of the members from MST3K.

Welcome!

This blog is about one of the greatest show ever – Mystery Science Theater 3000. If you haven’t seen it, that is just a must!

MST3K is an American cult television comedy created by Joel Hodgson. The series about a man who has been trapped in space by two mad scientists and is forced to watch B-movies with his two robot sidekicks. The question is, how many B-movies does it take for a man to be mad?

The series are so insane that you must love it! It’s not mad crazy, but the idea of the plot is so unlikely you so you just shake your head and go along with it. Or perhaps you must have my kind of humor to enjoy it, because my girlfriend just hate it! She thinks the show consists of so much nonsense, but isn’t that the point? I mean why would it else rum for 10 full seasons and have loads of fans all over the world?

The show was cancelled 1999, but – and this is great – a revival of the series were launched in 2015 and 14 new episodes will be shot!! $6 364 229 was donated to help bring back the series, which was a clear message about the series popularity. So, I’m really looking forward to 14 brand new episodes which will contain cheesy holiday movies.

As I said, if you haven’t watched MST3K, do it! Check out the official MST3K You Tube Channel to see top riffs, best of Satellite Love and even Full Movies. Here you can see why we love the series so much!

Actually, in 2007 MST3K was listed as one of the top 100 Television shows of all time by Time.com. I’m so looking forward to the new episodes and is so glad the MST3K Kickstarter campaign was so successful!
